MATCH REPORTS OF SUNDAY 23rd APRIL 1995.
It was like Roy of the Rovers the finish to this match between the Under 18's West and Enfield Rangers on Sunday to decide who might win the league title of the Boreham Wood Youth League Premier Division Section. The Saints only needed a point from this match to win the Championship whilst Enfield needed a win to keep their hopes high. The !8's West got off to a good start when John Cronin slipped the ball through for Neil DONALD to race onto and drive the ball low into the back of the net to make it 1-0 after 12 minutes.
Ten minutes later Enfield equalised after an error in the Saints defence and the match then seemed to be heading for a draw which the Saints needed to win the title. Then disaster struck when after soaking up lots of pressure Enfield broke clear against the run of play and scored again to give them a 2-1 lead. The Under 18's West slung everything at them to get that goal back but the ball just would not go in but with only seconds to go John Cronin gave it one more try and he slipped the ball through with neat pass which split the Enfield defence and Tom LAWRENCE was onto it in a flash and raced clear of the defenders and drove the ball low past the static Enfield keeper to make the score 2-2 and also give them the point they needed for the league title, Champions, Champions. They only had time to kick off before the referee blew his whistle to end and what proved to be an exciting match.
The Under 18's East also had a good day on Sunday when they defeated Princes Park at home by five goals to nil with goals from Mark WARRINER, Toby AZZOPARDI, Tom WESTCOTT, Danny BOWMAN and Ben GRAHAM.
Another team that had a good day at the office were the Under 16's who were away to Harpenden Rovers and they returned with a 7-2 victory and scoring the goals were Andy WRAY with two, Toby OKAPI with a brace as well whilst there were singles from Jack WINN, Stephen RAY and Ian HAMBLEDON.
Last Thursday the Under 13's East turned in a great performance to hold the league champions Boreham Wood JSC at Francis Bacon School to a 2-2 draw. The first goal was scored by Paul TAYLOR with a fine shot from ten yards whilst Tom CROWNE scored the second with a free kick which he drove home from 25 yards into bottom corner which left the Boreham Wood JSC keeper rooted to his line.
Also playing Boreham Wood JSC were the Under 13's West and they went down 3-0 at home and it might have been more if it were not for their keeper Michael Burr who pulled off some great saves throughout the match.
At home to Garston Boys in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup were the Under 12's who eventually ran out 9-1 winners with a tremendous second half display of football after they had only led 2-1 at half time. Scoring the goals were Andrew CLARKE with four well taken goals plus singles from Chris DUNDON, Mark MALLOY, Daniel TANSLEY, Trevor SMITH and Ryan Hughes with a beautiful cross-cum-shot from the right wing.
The Under 11's went down 2-1 at home to Harpenden Colts in the semi-final of their Challenge Cup match with the Saints only goal being scored by Greg DEACON whilst keeper Peter Hanson was named man of the match after pulling a string of fine saves throughout the game.
It has been a great week for the Under 10's East with firstly a 6-2 victory over S & K with goals from Nick MALHAM 2 plus singles from Ben HERD, Chris SEEBY, Nathan MAYCOCK and Lawrence ANSCOMB. On Sunday they defeated Brookside at home 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup with another two goals from Nick MALHAM plus two from Chris SEEBY and one each from Matthew Hanson and a cracking 25 yard shot from Nathan MAYCOCK. It was not only been great week for the Under 10's East it as been a great season for the them as well having won their league title in the Red Division of the Bushey Friendly League having remained unbeaten all the season and finishing 14 points clear of the team in the runners-up spot.
In the Challenge Plate saw the Under 10's West lose 2-1 away to Hemel Albion with the Saints goal being scored by Tom HERD whilst Peter REGAN scored the only goal for the Under 15's as they also lost 2-1 away in the Benevolent Shield against to Boreham Wood.
