Clarence Park finale for the Under 18's

After two years of under-18 football, this season was the last for City Youth’s U18 North and West sides. The sides finished in style by playing each other in a fiercely contested match at St Albans City’s Clarence Park stadium on May 13.

The U18 West side had just finished an impressive League season by finishing second in the Yellow division, so started firm favourites against the North team, which had finished their season eighth in the division below. But the game was very even, with no goals in the first half.

And it was North who took the lead, when Neil Jardine’s fine through-ball set up top scorer Ashley Bryant for a cool finish. North defended well, led by captain Richard Cook. But with ten minutes to go Greg Springall struck an excellent equaliser, and with a couple of minutes to go the same player scored again to give West the win.

Both teams (and the spectators) enjoyed a game that was played in good spirit throughout, and was a fitting way to end their careers with City Youth.

Under 16's Win the Spring Shield

St Albans U16 East defeated Hadley Rangers 2-0 in the final of the Watford Friendly league U16 Spring Shield. Second half goals from Matt Balser and Sam Law sealed a great team performance to lift the trophy. The U16 East had already won the Green Division title of the WFL, remaining unbeaten in the league for the 2010 / 11 season.

The opposition took the lead in the first half but the Warriors were back on terms quickly when Edward Anders was fouled in the area and he converted the penalty himself.

Shortly afterwards Sam Waters-Rathjen put the Warriors in front with a top-quality strike from outside the penalty box. Dragons then struck back to make it 2-2 at half time.

The Warriors went ahead again when midfielder Max Sharpe jumped well to head in a free kick taken by Eddie Amato and when Edward Anders latched on to a perfect cross from Tom Daly to get the fourth goal it looks like the Warriors were home and dry. However Kings Langley kept battling and scored once again to make the score 4-3 but St Albans City Warriors were able to hang on for the final nervous minutes for a well-deserved win.

North lift the Cup

St Albans Under 12's North started strongly putting Hendon under pressure till they conceded a free kick five yards outside Hendon's box.  The keeper could only parry a vicious shot from Jacob Bockenhauer and the ever alert Charlie Lunnis despatched the loose ball.  St Albans went two up before the break with a lovely finish from Amir Stapleton.

Second Half, St Albans dominated the early part, but Hendon refused to give up going close a couple of times, but a fine finish from Will Mattin put the match to bed and St Albans lifted the cup. Good performance throughout the team. Man Of the Match  -   Charlie Lunnis

Girls U10 Challenge Cup Final

Garston Ladies U10's vs St Albans City North Girls U10's, played at the County Ground Letchworth

Result: Garston Ladies U10's  0  St Albans City North Girls U10's  1

Following on from last weeks 3 - 0 win over St Albans City South in the U10's Shield Final just a single goal won this game for the St Albans girls when Captain, Lauren Walker, scored in the 17th minute with a powerful shot that caught the keeper unawares.

The first half was all St Albans with 2 shots from Penny Bliss both of which were saved, sustained pressure in the first half should have led to more goals but good defending by Garston prevented more.

The second half was fast and exciting with more pressure from Garston but St Albans defended well and Hollie Kiff made a number of excellent saves. The teams were well supported with lots of vocal support for both sides from friends and family. A true Cup Final played between the best two teams in the League!

Well done to all the team for their fantastic achievements this season with winners medals in the Shield and County Cup Finals and runners up medals for the under 10's League Division One.

Under 10's Girls South Crowned Div 2 Champions

St Albans City Youth U10's Girls South celebrate after being crowned Division 2 Champions and receiving their winners trophy. The girls topped their division with 12 wins, 2 draws and only 1 loss, with an impressive +22 goal difference.

Mid Herts Rural Minors League - Cup Final

Despite St Albans City Youth Under 10’s North being favourites it was Wodson who took a shock lead in the first minute. Shaking the cobwebs out of their heads the North then proceeded to go on the attack, Harry Smith hitting the bar and Harry Floyd shooting wide with the Wodson keeper making a string of fine saves. Eventually a fierce shot from Harry Floyd nestled in the corner bringing the game level.

It was all one way then, with more efforts from Harry Floyd, Harry Smith and Harry Shepherd before a deflected Smith effort left Harry Shepherd with a simple finish which he calmly took. A second Floyd goal calmed the nerves just before half time.

The break refreshed the team and a 2nd Shepherd goal followed quickly, then a good low finish from the official's Man of the Match Smith took the doubt out of the result. North's keeper Nathan Glasscoe made a stunning save tipping the  ball over the bar from a rasping Wodson shot before Harry Floyd hit his 3rd and headed a 4th.

A well deserved 2nd from Wodson who played the game with fantastic spirit was then quickly followed by Goals from Matthew Breeze and Jack Hughes.  9-2 the final score

13's North win WFL League Cup Final

In the League Cup Final the Under 13’s North played Chorley Wood.

The Young Saints took a 1 – 0 lead with a goal from Akim Akinbinu but the opponents struck back to go 2 – 1 up.  Just before half time Joe Lowthian, with a delightful little chip over the keeper drew the teams level a 2 – 2.

In the second half the North played some neat passing football and it was from one of these fine moves that Stuart Peet struck the winning goal with a cracking shot into the top corner giving the North a 3 – 2 victory.

After the game Stuart Peet received the man of the match award which was voted for by a representative from the Watford Friendly League.

Under 12s Girls - Herts Girls Football Partnership League U12 Champions

St Albans City Youth Under 12 Girls League Champions 2011

After losing several players from the squad at the end of last season, the U12 Girls joined the Herts Girls Football Partnership League to play a mixture of 7-a-side and 9-a-side football this season.  Having recruited new players, the U12’s have adjusted to these changes and proved to be capable of playing good competitive football as well as being great friends.  We have had a solid defence which has let in very few goals and a fast and powerful attack capable of scoring against any opposition.  This season has been very successful, as we not only won the HGFPL start of season 7-a-side tournament, but also the League by 5 points clear!

St Albans City Youth Under  11’s  West  v  Comets

This match was always planning to be a good one; it was. One record was going to be broken in this match, St Albans West were unbeaten at home and Comets had won all of their matches so far this season, only conceding one goal. It was also first versus second and even though it wouldn’t change the league at all at the last day of the season, it would be interesting to find out who will win.

The first 10 minutes were a bit slow, Comets were just the better team going one on one in the 4th minute, Leo Bloom did have a shot but it unfortunately went wide. That all changed in the 11th minute. Firstly Leo Bloom shoots just wide, 30 second later Comets shoot, Alex Verdier gets a hand on it but a Comets striker taps the ball into the open net,

0-1.

Naz Ahmed then has a effort from long range but the goalkeeper (who is getting used to not conceding goals) saves quite easily. Comets do then try an attack, their first shot was blocked well by the defence, their players should of scored but he scuffs it. Karan Mahatma then shoots on target but the goalkeeper saves again. A moment of confusion then happened as Comets strangely got a penalty even though it probably wasn’t, Comets take the penalty well and score, 0-2.

Comets continued to attack, making Charlie hit the crossbar with an almost own goal. Brad then breaks but almost runs it off, he keeps it on and shoots from a very acute angle and scored a wonder goal on the 23rd minute, 1-2. Jacob Pearlman ten has to come off from an injury, Fred Watson replaces him. Comets continued to attack but brave defending by Samuel Ellis & Aaron Weyman denies them a goal. Just before the half time whistle blew, it looked like Comets were going to score but a spectacular clearance off the line keeps St Albans West in the game. HALF TIME

The second half started well for St Albans West, Aaron Weyman shooting wide. West then shot again, the goalkeeper almost made a mistake but he manages to stop it from going in. In the same minute Comets manages to score a good goal, 1-3.

It got worse for St Albans West when Comets scored another good goal each made the score 1-4. The game was all but finished in the 52nd minute when Comets added

A goal from an amazing free kick, 1-5. In injury time, a decent chip by a Comets player ended the game, 1-6. FULL TIME

After the match, The St Albans West manager Jeremy Pearlman commented ‘even though we lost, it wasn’t an awful end to the season.’

Amazing win by Under 11’s West

An amazing win by St Albans City Youth Under 11’s West destroys Harpenden Panthers. Jacob Paton gets man of the match for running his socks off and doing some great passing. Karan, Leo, Brad, Jacob & Harry could help St Albans West’s chances of going to division 2. Besides the amazing play up front, the defence and keeper also played well.

The game started well for the West, Brad Slocombe did score but it was a fraction offside even though it wasn't. Jacob Pearlman then goes 1 on 1 with the keeper but can't get the ball into the back of the net. That all changed when a Harpenden Panthers player goes 1 on 1 but luckily for St Albans West, they scuff their shot. Harpenden Panthers then create even more pressure, making Aaron Weyman have to clear the ball off of the line. Harpenden Panthers then score a good goal to make it 1-0 to the home team 22 minutes into the game.

After that, St Albans West pick up their game and Brad Slocombe almost scores. Harrison Bell does a great run and scores spectacularly, that makes it 1-1. It then goes end to end and Alex has to make a save but then St Albans West hit the post. The whistle then blows for half time.

West start the second half excellently getting a corner and a goal disallowed. Harrison Bell then almost scores again when a good pass by Mete Johnston gives him the chance but he shoots just wide. Then a superb peace of play by St Albans West leads to a goal, Harrison Bell passes the ball to Adam Ransley who lays it off to Jacob Pearlman who smashes the ball into the net 1-2. Adam Ransley then creates a good chance for Jacob Pearlman but he can't score.

It then turns into a midfield battle for 5 minutes, Aaron does have to make 2 good clearances though. Brad Slocombe goes through but the Harpenden Panthers keeper manages to make a good save to deny him. Fred then does an amazing through ball to Brad who slots it into the bottom corner, 1-3.

After that St Albans West played as if they were Barcelona, Leo Bloom then scored to make it 1-4. Karan Mahatma then beats a couple of defenders and then Harpenden Panthers goalkeeper and scores to make the score 1-5, a brilliant solo goal. Brad almost makes it 1-6 for St Albans in injury time but his shot goes just wide. The final whistle then blew.

Jarrod & Jeremy said after the match that he is proud of everyone for their performances today. Every St Albans West player, parent & fan was happy except Harrison Bell's dad who missed his son scoring again.

Under 11's Girls North  into League Cup Final

The Under 11's North Girls played a league cup semi-final at home against Garston Ladies. We started brightly, and latched onto a stray goal kick after only one minute, with Nicola Gosling firing us into the lead! The City girls kept up the pressure brilliantly, and a fine run from Emily Schofield resulted in Nicola Gosling having yet another opportunity to score past the 'keeper, which she duly obliged! Some fine defending from both Mary Leach and Romy Kelleher kept the Garston strike force at bay, and Ellen Fox was commanding in goal when required to make a diving save towards the end of the half. Right on the stroke of half-time, we were awarded a corner after yet another Schofield run. Isabelle Poole floated the ball in perfectly for Mhairi Pennifer to volley with the outside of her right boot and give us a 3-0 half time scoreline. Magnificent. The second half began at a frantic pace, with Garston trying to force a come-back. Once again, the defence were outstanding, well supported by excellent midfield play from Evie Wilkinson and Rose Noden. Shauna Smith then began a legendary midfield run and slotted the ball to Mhairi Pennifer, who beat three players to slot the ball home with a fine left foot shot.

The match ended 4-0, and sealed our place in the league cup final, which is to be hosted on hometurf at Highfield on Saturday May 7th. Player of the match went to Mary Leach, who was both calm and determined in defence and captained the side brilliantly today.

Girls South book their place in the Sheild Final against their club mates the Girls North

The Under 10's Girls South played Haddesdon Owls in the Sheild Semi Final, this was the fourth meeting of the sides this season. Hoddesdon took a first half lead, somewhat against the run of play. St Albans struggled to create clear cut chances despite long spells of pressure, whilst  Hoddesdon continued to look dangerous on the break.

The second half saw yet more pressure from City, but Hodesdon defended well, and cleared their lines efficiently as the clock ticked down. The game looked over, but City refused to lie down, piling on the pressure in the final moments. Finally, with what proved to be the final kick of normal time, Phoebe Skinner broke through the Hoddesdon defence, riding a last ditch challenge to slide the ball past their keeper, and forcing extra time.

Extra time saw few chances, and so the game was settled by penalties. With both teams scoring 2 out 5 penalties, it went to sudden death. Emily Sibley made her 4th save, with Phoebe Skinner scoring the winning penalty. The final will by an all St Albans affair, with North v South on May 7th.

Scorers: Phoebe Skinner. Penalties: Ellie Holder, Megan Roome, Phoebe Skinner, Player of the Match: Lauren Standing

What a match

The West Herts Challenge Cup match between the Under 11’s East and Herons had everything with the east coming back from being two goals down to force extra time and a dramatic last minute equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Herons took a 2 – 0 lead with two cracking free kicks from Liam Beaumont, but then early in the second half the East pulled one back with a well flighted lofted shot from Ollie Barnett. As the East pushed for an equaliser they were caught on the break and James Stenson nipped in to restore Herons two goal lead.

The game flowed end to end and then a stunning long range shot from Sam Ready made it 3 – 2 whilst Tayler Fennel popped up in the last few minutes to score from close range and take the match to extra time.

In the second period of extra time yet another stunning strike from Sam Ready made it 4 – 3 to give the East the lead for the first time in the match.

With only seconds remaining the hard working Samson Alexander pounced to score a dramatic equaliser for Herons and make the final score 4 – 4.

So to the dreaded penalty shoot out which saw the East just edge out Herons by four spot kicks to three. Scorers for the East were Ollie Barnett, Oscar James, Tom Naylor and Tayler Fennel with the winning kick. Scoring for the Herons were Frankie Williams, Ricardo Thornhill and Liam Beaumont.

Goalkeepers Jacob Windfield for the East and Harry castle for Herons both had fine games for their respective teams.
