St Albans City Youth organised a Community Day at Highfield Park. This work forms part of their work in the Community helping young people to develop as Sports Coaches. Teams of people from O2 Telefónica UK Limited, St Albans City Youth and Oakland's College Special Needs Students were put through their paces by the staff from Highfield Park Trust. Over 50 people took part in delivering a Children's Play Area, a Memorial Site as well as gathering apples for the Highfield Park apple juice service. After the work was complete the participants were able to relax for a few minutes before taking part in mixed football games, organised by Tom Ward.

Community Day 7

Staff from Highfield Park Trust joined forces with coaches from St Albans City Youth to provide an excellent Community Day and Work Experience for the students from Oakland's College and Longdean School.

Tasks included making a Bridge, Hedge Clearance, Path Making and Building a Giant Bonfire to clear away the debris.

St Albans City Youth Community Coach Jason Cousins said "It is great to get so many Community groups working together as a team. A number of the volunteers have Special Needs and they were able to complete useful tasks and make a difference to the local Community. My son Henry made a note of the jobs that were completed as part of his school work shadowing project"

The day ended with a huge football match and rounders game with everyone taking part.

Roger Thomas from Highfield Park Trust was delighted with the results.

Teams of staff from Oakland's College, Highfield Park and St Albans City Youth worked tirelessly at Highfield Park to help towards creating a new Community Sports field for the local residents to use..

The work forms part of St Albans City Youth work in the Community which has seen them improve a number of Sports facilities around the St Albans District.

Sports coaches from St Albans City Youth were invited to Greenwood Park last Friday, part of St Albans City Youth "Work in the Community" at the various Sports venues across the St Albans District.

The picture shows students from Oakland's College gaining some valuable work experience. This time they were invited to undertake some Hedge Planting. The students enjoyed the work and were able to work as a team and plant over 300 shrubs and make a natural boundary to the new allotments recently created at Greenwood Park.

"We had great fun and clearly made a difference" said Tom Ward a Community Coach from St Albans City Youth.

Thanks go to Jane Roskilly from Leisure Connection and the staff at Greenwood Park for supporting the activities. Also thank you to Hertfordshire County Council Aiming High Fund for supporting the staff education that will leave a legacy of trained staff for the future.

A CLEAN SWEEP FOR LONDON COLNEY

St Albans City Youth teamed up the students at Oakland's College to refurbish the London Colney Football Ground.

This was a similar but smaller event than the one at Clarence Park to allow the Special Needs students from Oakland's College to have a leading role and to give them a better chance to express themselves.

The jobs included litter picking, sweeping, washing and cutting back the trees and hedges.

The Disability Coaches from STACY oversaw the entire operation giving occasional words of encouragement throughout the day.
